When I first met Steve, the founder of Vim Interactive, I thought of myself as a pretty skilled web designer. I’d made sites for all my old bands in the past and people really liked what I was doing. I showed Steve my in-progress redesign of CoveringFire.com thinking that I would impress him. I thought wrong. That’s when I learned there’s a huge world of web design that I was completely unaware of. Steve showed me how it was a great start but how things I’d never considered were hurting me and my brand. He showed me how a search engine like Google would see the site: it was a complete mess. He showed me how people with disabilities such as the visually impaired would experience the site: not at all. Then, with the eye of a true artist, he said how he would do things differently: fewer colors yet stronger choices, a font that communicated a feeling, ways to build myself into the brand. He was brilliant and he was totally right. I hired him to do both the site and my Myspace page ( www.myspace.com/coveringfire ). I’m ecstatic about the results! The main lesson he taught me was “perceived value”, that through the use of thousands of subtle visual cues we teach the viewer of the value of our company/brand. It took me from looking like a local band to looking like a peer of the biggest touring acts. I’ve gotten so many more fans as a result and the different has been tangible. And even better, Steve’s SEO (search engine optimization) has made a Google search for the keyword “Covering Fire” (which once had returned results only about the military tactic) make my band show up as 4 of the 10 results on the very first page! He and Vim Interactive have made my band as relevant to the definition of the term “Covering Fire” as more than 60 years of military tradition.
