About FreeIndex

What is FreeIndex.com?FreeIndex is an online directory for US businesses. It's completely free to add your company - even upgrades are without charge. The site's funded by discreet third party advertising so no matter what your marketing budget is, FreeIndex has something to offer.

What happens after I've signed up?Once you've signed up and verified your email address, everyone has access to My FreeIndex. You then have access to edit your business details, request and view reviews and a range of map tools where you can personalise your location and bookmark preferences, as well as the 'send to mobile' function. You will also be able to manage any company reviews you have written.
If you chose to register your business it will be listed within the category you have selected (unless you have suggested a new category) and on the pages that match your location. An example of this basic listing is below:

You will then have access to the Business Advertising Tools where you can create your own page about your business complete with reviews, a web link, images and more.
Your business's profile page, although it may appear 'live' may not be searchable or display all of the details you have entered until your details have been manually approved by our content team.

How long will my business remain on FreeIndex?As long as you want. Your business will remain on the site until you remove it or we find that the business is no longer in existence.
You can hide your business in your 'Account Settings' once logged in to My FreeIndex. If you’d like to delete your account entirely please contact us.

Do you provide any paid advertising options?At present, we don’t provide any paid advertising options but are always interested to hear your ideas.

Signup and Login Help

What’s the difference between my username and email address?To make things simpler, your username is your email address and your email address is your username. They're the same thing.
If your email address no longer works, you can still log in to FreeIndex but you should then change your details to a new email address that works, to ensure you don't miss out on business enquiries.

I can’t find a suitable category for my business.You can suggest a category if you can’t find a suitable one to list your business under. Either do this on the registration form or within 'My FreeIndex' once you've logged in.
If you do suggest a category, your business will not appear in your suggested category until that category has been approved by our content team or an alternative has been assigned.

I can’t select a location on the sign up form.Some browsers (especially AOL) block any kind of pop-up and won’t allow you to select a location.
If you really can’t complete the signup process, please
contact us and let us know the difficulties you were experiencing and send us the following information:
- Your Full Name
- Company Name - Must be your official company name
- US Landline Telephone No.
- Business Zipcode
- Business Address
- The category you would like to appear in.

What happens once I've signed up?Once signed up, everyone has access to My FreeIndex which is basically a minature version of the site, personalised to suit you. You will also be able to view any company reviews you have written.
If you chose to register your business it will be listed within the category you have selected and on the relevant location pages. An example of this basic listing is below:

You will then have access to the Advertising area of My FreeIndex, where you can create your own page about your business and request ratings / reviews.

Can I be listed more than once?Businesses can only be listed
once on the site. If you run more than one legitimate business you’ll need to create a new account for any additional businesses you want to add. Please use a different email address, and make sure it is evidently distinct from your other businesses - so our content team doesn't mistakenly reject it for being duplicate.
You can however appear in more than one location by adding branches if you have offices or operations physically located in different areas with an address.
If you find that a business is listed more than once, please
contact us to let us know.

I am a franchisee. Can I sign up?We allow franchisees to sign up only when their head office has signed up. All franchises are then listed on the head office page and within their individual locations. Ask your head office to signup if they haven’t already.
Creating Your Page on FreeIndex

I can’t find a suitable category for my business.You can suggest a category if you can’t find a suitable one to list your business under. In this case, your business will not appear in your suggested category until that category has been approved by our content team. Either do this on the registration form or within the 'Your Company Details' once you've logged in.

Can I add images to my Page?Yes. You can add up to 20 images to your profile description - these should not be logos, but descriptive images that help portray your business, products and services in more detail.
In order to add your company logo you need to have written a company profile. You can then Enhance your page and add your company logo and website address. Page Enhancements are free, as are all of the features on FreeIndex.

Where do I list my website address? You can list your website address which will appear at the top of your page in your
Page Enhancements. You first need to write a profile about what your company does.
We also provide you with some statistics on the number of times visitors have clicked on the link to your website.

I have tried to upload my logo but it isn’t on display.Gifs and Jpeg images work best. If you have a jpeg image which is a CMYK format, it will not upload. This is the most likely reason why your logo doesn’t display.
Some images with certain characters will also not always upload correctly including images that contain full-stops, commas, colons, ‘%20’ etc.
Company Logos are not allowed in your PhotoBook as there is a separate field for the logo within the Page Enhancements area. Only photos that help describe what your business does should be uploaded to your PhotoBook.

I can’t complete my Company ProfileIf you are struggling to complete your company profile, please
contact us with the description you would like to appear on your company page.
Remember, this needs to be unique, a minimum of 200 words and written in the third person.

I can't find my business on the site.In some cases your details won't appear until they have been manually reviewed. Please be patient.

Changes To Your Page on FreeIndex

How do I change my business details?To edit your business details you need to
login to 'My FreeIndex'.
Please Note: For security reasons. we cannot make changes to your company information for you. You need to login and do it yourself.

How can I improve my presence on FreeIndex?There are a few obvious things you can do to get the most out of your business page on FreeIndex.
- Write as much as you can to clearly describe you business activities.
- Upload pictures of what you do
- Get your customers to provide testimonials to help prospective clients choose you over someone else
- Add your website address to steer customers to your website.
Adding customer testimonials also helps your listing position in you main business category. The more positive feedback you have, the higher you will appear.
You can also
recommend us to other businesses you know to get a highlighted listing position.

My profile changes aren't appearing on the site.Your company information is reviewed by our team of editors and this can take up to 3 working days. We believe this helps to maintain the quality of the site - ultimately benefiting you - but please be patient as we have many companies to check.

Can I remove my location and map from my profile page? Once logged into your Account Settings, you can remove the first part of your address and the map from your profile page.
Doing this will also hide your company marker on the map-based search results.
However, FreeIndex is a directory of US companies, not websites, and as such, displaying your location should rarely be a problem.

You say my business name is not valid.We use your company name to create your own page on FreeIndex. Your company name must therefore be your official company name and be unique.
We do checks to ensure that the businesses listed on the site are indeed the correct names and if for any case more than one business tries to use the same name we will give precedence to the company with the official name.
Emails and Enquiries

Which email address do my business enquiries get sent to?When a user sends you a business enquiry from your page on the site, as well as it going into your FreeIndex Inbox, you will also get an email sent to the email address you specified when you signed up. This email address is also your username.
You can
change your email address / username, in your account settings.
If you find that emails are not being sent to you even though the email address you have specified is correct, please check your junk folders.

Can I stop receiving emails from the site?Go to your Account to stop receiving Enquiry Emails from front-end users. You can also alter other email and contact preferences.
We will, however, send you emails from time to time regarding service announcements as stated in our
privacy policy.

Why didn't my test enquiry work?We aim to ensure that, wherever possible, emails sent to businesses on the site are valid enquiries. We have systems in place to stop misuse of the email facility and as such, sending an email entitled 'test' might not work. As long as the email address you have provided in your Account Settings is correct, there shouldn't be a problem.
Ratings & Reviews Help

How do I review a company?Click on the 'review' link on the page of the company you'd like to review - you'll be taken directly to a short review form.
You will need to register in order to write a review by entering some details. In this way we can track who has written reviews when and can legitimate each review.

How do reviews effect the order of businesses on the site?The default order of listings on FreeIndex.co.uk depends on how many good reviews the business has and its chosen advertising package. All are free but some have Enhanced features which are displayed above more basic listings. Others have a company profile (second), while Basic listings feature last because they provide the least information to site users.
If you're logged in; businesses can also be sorted according to your default location (you can change this in you Account Settings) or where you are, after you’ve entered the first part of your postcode.

How do I change my default location?You can alter the zipcode of your default location in your Account, once logged in. This will not interfere with your business address if you’ve entered one.

How do I view businesses in a different area?Change your default location zipcode in your Account, once logged in. It’s not permanent – you can change it again at any time, and it does not interfere with your Business address if you’ve entered one.

My Reviewers – What is this?If your past customers have reviewed your company they will be displayed in your MapBook. To request ratings and reviews from your customers go to the My Reviews section of My FreeIndex.

How do I bookmark a company?You can bookmark companies from their profile pages across FreeIndex.co.uk, or by clicking on the ‘Bookmark’ links against businesses in your MapBook.

I know of a company near me that’s not shown on the Map Tools.This company has not registered with FreeIndex – new companies are registering daily, however we have not bought our data, unlike most directories, so the site's not yet comprehensive.
As you know, it's free to sign up. So if you let them know, they too can appear on the map.
Your Account

Can I change my Username / Email Address?Yes. Even if you can no longer access your old email account you can still use the address to login to FreeIndex and change it (your email address is also your username for the site).

How do I remove my business?How do I remove my business from FreeIndex?
You can remove your business details from FreeIndex in your
Account Settings under the Business Preferences heading. This will hide your business details: if you’d like to delete your account entirely please contact us.
Privacy

Can I hide my landline number?Yes. You can opt to hide your landline number within your Account, in the Business Preferences section or your Account Settings. Your mobile number will be displayed in its place, if you have specified one.

Will I receive cold calls from you?No, not from us. Never.
FreeIndex is completely free so we have no reason to call you up with the hard sell! If someone is calling you to sell you things, please let us know so we can try and put a stop to it.
If you find yourself paying to use our service, something is wrong. Please contact us immediately.

What happens to my details once I've registered?Your details are simply kept on our secure server with various safety measures in place. We don't give or sell your information to any other company - we take privacy very seriously. At any time you can remove your details from the site.

Can I hide my address details?Yes. But FreeIndex.com is a directory of US companies that provide an offline service rather than being a list of websites, so your basic location should be displayed. However, you can hide the first part of your address in your Account Settings, so users only have a rough idea about where your business is based.
